Passive solar cooling Passive cooling is quite different from passive heating, and planning for both at the same time is where things get interesting. If you live in the north of Australia you probably won’t need heating at all, and you can design your house exclusively for passive cooling. If the climate where you live varies, you will need to consider ways to optimise your home for all
from collection and storage points to different areas of the house. A strictly passive design will rely on natural heat transfer, but some applications use fans, ducts, and blowers to help distribute heat. Guide to Passive Solar Home Design By using the basic physical characteristics and layout of your home, you can improve its natural lighting and regulate temperature for indoor comfort
These designs often utilized the sun as a heat source and the term ‘passive house’ was possibly derived from the passive solar features of these houses, such as the Saskatchewan Conservation House and the Leger Passive house design principles in Pepperell, Massachusetts.
As a starting point, passive house design addresses and exploits elements from the building’s surrounding context (e.g., land form, sun, wind, rain, vegetation, etc.) and organises the interior of the building to maximise energy savings and indoor environment quality.
The principles of passive design are not new and are, in fact, based on simple, proven concepts. Passive design refers to an approach that discourages reliance on mechanical systems for heating, cooling and lighting and instead harnesses naturally occurring phenomenon such as the power of the sun, direction of wind and other climatic effects to maintain consistent indoor temperatures and
